Watson, a multi-disciplinary artist based in Frederick County, Maryland, has been an integral part of the region’s art community since the early 2000s. He is a passionate advocate for the arts, an educator, a curator, and board member for area non-profits. His commitment to fostering artistic expression and community engagement is evident in every aspect of his work.
Watson's artistic journey began with a foundation in natural media, where he honed his skills in traditional illustration techniques. Over time, he expanded his repertoire to include digital design, motion graphics, and various other mediums. After gaining recognition through numerous galleries and art festivals, he transitioned to creating art full-time fine art, returning to his roots as a natural media artist. Today, Watson primarily works with acrylics and wood, frequently blending non-traditional materials and innovative techniques into his creations.
His contributions to Maryland’s artistic landscape are extensive. As a leader within organizations such as the Frederick County Art Association, Artomatic@Frederick, Frederick Arts Council, and Artomatic Inc., he has played a pivotal role in promoting area art initiatives. Watson has also served on public art related committees for the Frederick and Howard County Arts Councils and is actively involved with Blossoms of Hope. His engagement spans various groups, including NOMA Gallery, Griffin Artists, and the Frederick Creative Coalition. Recently, he helped organize a public forum to address needs for affordable studio spaces for artists, demonstrating his commitment to community-driven solutions.
Since the early 2000s, Watson has acted as a lobbyist for the arts, collaborating with fellow artists and community leaders to advocate for a thriving creative ecosystem. His consulting work with several arts-related non-profits, along with his former role on the board of Artomatic Inc., showcases his dedication to transforming the region into a vibrant venue for artistic expression.
As an educator, Watson has taught design, digital art, and branding at secondary and community college institutions. Currently, he serves as the Gallery Manager and Curator at Howard Community College, overseeing The Rouse Company Foundation Gallery and The Richard B. Talkin Family Art Gallery. His commitment to educating the next generation of artists remains a cornerstone of his career.
Watson's artistic style, influenced by his commercial art background, has evolved from figurative and pop art to pure geometric abstraction. His bold, bright forms and crisp edges create dynamic fields of color, reflecting a unique fusion of design and illustrative elements. He often draws inspiration from graffiti, early cartoon animation, and minimalism, resulting in works that captivate viewers across the Mid-Atlantic region.
Recently, Watson received a C.A.N. grant from the Frederick Arts Council, supported by the NEA, for his ambitious project, “The System.” This large-scale installation features multiple projectors casting animated images of a mechanical machine onto black drapery, accompanied by a captivating soundtrack of mechanical sounds. The project was met with enthusiastic public interest, prompting an extended exhibition run.
